Farzin Mumtahena  Once known for topping all the wrong lists, Bangladesh might be well on its way to becoming the new ‘Asian Tiger’. From what was considered an economic basket case to being the 41st largest economy in the world, it is the unforeseen success story everyone has been talking about. Centre for Economics and Business Research (CEBR) in their latest World Economic League Table (WELT) has published the growth prospects and rankings of all 193 countries. Bangladesh has the potential to climb 19 steps up the ladder by 2033 and secure a place amongst the 25 largest economies. If GDP grows by 7.9% as forecasted by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), it could even become the second best performing economy in 2019.

Kefayet Alfesan, Sheikh Rafi Ahmed, Farhana Akhter, Nahaly Nafisa Khan  Yellow Vest Protests in France Kefayet Alfesan France is currently undergoing a nationwide mass movement for the first time in the last 50 years. It is popularized as ‘gilets jaunes’, French for ‘yellow vests’.
The protests started around November 17 when French drivers wearing yellow vests led a demonstration of hundreds of thousands of people across the country to push back against rising taxes on fossil fuel. As part of his many economic reforms, French president Emmanuel Macron announced the additional green tax on gas and diesel earlier this year which is to be in effect from January 1 to minimize France’s reliance on fossil fuel. আব্দুল আহাদ, জিনাত জাহান খান, রাকিবুল ইসলাম, তানজিয়া তাসনিম আদীবা  বিপর্যয়ে দেশের ব্যাংকিং খাত আব্দুল আহাদ বেশিরভাগ উন্নয়নশীল দেশের ন্যায়ে বাংলাদেশের আর্থিক খাতও ব্যাংকিং সেক্টরের উপর নির্ভয়শীল। তবে বর্তমানে সেক্টরটি নানা অনিয়ম, দুর্নীতি এবং অর্থ আত্মসাতের মতো ঘটনার কারণে উদ্বেগজনক সময় পার করছে। বিগত জুন মাস পর্যন্ত, শুধু রাষ্ট্রীয় ব্যাংকগুলোর অনাদায়যোগ্য ঋনের হার দাঁড়িয়েছে ২৮.০২%, যা গত দশ বছরে সর্বোচ্চ। সোনালী, রূপালী, জনতাসহ প্রায় ১০টি ব্যাংক মূলধন ঘাটতিতে ভুগছে। কেন্দ্রীয় ব্যাংকের নির্দেশনা না মেনে অধিক পরিমানে ঋণের যোগান দেওয়ায় এবং যথাসময়ে ঋণের টাকা আদায় করতে না পারায় এই মূলধন ঘাটতিতে পড়েছে উক্ত ব্যাংকগুলো। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের মতে, রাষ্ট্রায়ত্ত সাতটি ব্যাংকের মূলধন ঘাটতির মোট পরিমাণ প্রায় ২৩,২৭০ কোটি টাকা। প্রতিবছর সরকার জাতীয় বাজেট থেকে প্রচুর আর্থিক সাহায্য দিচ্ছে এই ঘাটতি মেটানোর জন্য। জনগণের ট্যাক্সের টাকা ব্যবহার করে ব্যাংকগুলোর অপারেটিং কস্টের যোগান দেওয়া হচ্ছে।
