August 28th marked a phenomenal instance at the TSC Auditorium: the manifestation of notoriously boring, bookworm economists as lively, sporty and multitalented beings, turning the entire place into a kaleidoscope of colours and good spirits. And that too, after no less than five years! It had been rather unfortunate that we as a department were unable to host a freshers event annually, which is considered such a conventional part of anyone's university life, and therefore adding to the formidable and austere aura surrounding our department. Thankfully, this year, ESC came to the rescue and brought forth "EconDU Day 2016" in order to break the stigma. The function commenced with a welcome speech from our President, Mr Muhammad Nahian Bin Khaled, who utilised the opportunity to emphasized the need of such cultural events, especially in light of recent events. Apart from being an invaluable platform for the students to showcase their various extracurricular talents, engagements in activities like these ensure that the youth of today do not have the necessary time or interest to get involved into any socially harmful activities, thereby enabling to foster a healthier and exemplary environment for all. After the speech, floral wishes were given to the honorable guests by Muhammad Nahian Bin Khaled (President), Md Rafiul Arefin (General Secretary) and Mustahsin-ul-Aziz (Treasurer). The event was graced by the presence our beloved and honourable faculties, including none other than our respected Chairman Dr Nazma Begum, who expressed her amazement at the fact the students were able to organize such a splendid event without any official support from the department. She felt proud of that and provided assurance of future departmental support for further events. Our honourable club Moderator, Dr M M Akash conveyed his delight at such immaculate execution and noted the need for more of these functions. Among other honorable faculties, Dr Rushad Faridi, Dr Sayema Haque Bidisha and Mr Mahtab Uddin were also present. A video message from our faculties and ESC members rapturously captured the various aspects of our department and ESC, as well as the excitement and preparations surrounding the programme. Up next, the students took over the stage and set forth to perform an enigmatic array of dance, music, drama and fashion shows - leaving the audience mesmerized and captivated for the next three hours. As the old saying goes, "Save the best for the last." We at ESC, being firm believers in it, decided to conclude the day with a ravishing concert by our three in house bands, Oblique, Bibek and Bir. As they set the stage on fire, the students got up and cheered and danced and matched voices with them - the energy involved displaying no trace of tiredness from the weeklong preparations and the day's performances! We are extremely grateful towards our Executive Committee of 2015-26 who put their hearts and souls into this and also appreciate all the background work that was involved that went unseen for the majority of the audience. Hats off to them for accomplishing this next to impossible feat after so many years! Lastly, we are thankful to our sponsors Crescent Leather Products, TMSS, Black Horse and Canton; it would not have been possible for us to arrange such a joyous occasion without their enormous support. While the fresher's went home with gifts and warm welcomes from the EconDU family, we can gladly claim that this day was a milestone for all the batches involved, even for our beloved alumni who were present, and will remain as a day to be cherished by all for their lifetimes.
