Economics Study Center (ESC) is the pioneer student chapter of the Department of Economics, University of Dhaka. It represents the entire student body of the Department, and is responsible for promoting economic and business thinking, and facilitating relevant programs. The Center was established in 1973. Professor Dr. M M Akash and Associate Professor Dr. Atonu Rabbani are currently the co-moderators of this organization. Professor Dr. M M Akash, Chairman, Department of Economics, University of Dhaka, is the chief patron of Economics Study Center (ESC). The vision of the organization is to be an institution in the study and research of theoretical and applied economics, in order to ensure an active and dynamic participation in economic policymaking of the country.

Along with its regular activities like organizing seminars, symposiums, study circles, quiz and presentation competitions, the entity partners with prominent organizations in organizing high-profile events including the IMF, the EMK Center, Save the Children Bangladesh etc. It is noteworthy that it was one of the organizing partners of “South Asian Economics Students Meet (SAESM) 2018” held in January 2018 at Motel Saikat, Chittagong.

ESC is the founder member of Bangladesh Economics Students’ Network (BESN). It is a network of student bodies primarily based in the field of economics around the country.  

ESC is also a part of the Engage Men and Boys Alliance Bangladesh’s youth wing, The Youth Platform for Transforming Masculinities.  The EMB network members collectively advocate for gender transformative approaches to engage men and boys in advancing women’s rights and gender justice for all.

 ​Professor Dr. M M Akash is currently the chairperson of the Department of Economics, University of Dhaka and is the chief patron of Economics Study Center (ESC).

Dr Akash is a popular personality in the era of Economics in Bangladesh. He is now working as a Professor of economics at University of Dhaka since June, 2001.  He joined as a lecturer in the Department in 1982. He worked as a lecturer from 1982 to 1988, as an Assistant Professor from 1988 to 1994. To be noted, he has been with Economics Study Center (ESC) since its inception in 1973. Currently, he is the co-moderator of the organization.

​Dr. Rumana Huque
Dr Rumana Huque is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka. She is the Executive Director of the ARK Foundation and the Project Director of Tobacconomics. Dr Huque has extensive experience working with Bangladesh’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. John Hopkins University awarded her the Tobacco Control Leadership Program in 2015.
​She is currently the co-moderator of Economics Study Center.

• The Center is the only student organization in the country which manages an active blog section through its website where students write regularly on global and national economic issues.

• The Center brings out two annual publications, Bangladesh Students’ Digest on Economics and Development (BSDED) and Ceteris Paribus. BSDED showcases research papers from undergraduate students of our country on issues related to Economics, Development, and Social Sciences etc. Ceteris Paribus is a magazine devoted to analytical essays on issues relevant to Social Sciences from undergraduate students of the country. BSDED and Ceteris Paribus have two and three volumes respectively.

Highlights of Past Events

  • Organized the 1st Bangladesh Economics Summit in 2018 and the  2nd Bangladesh Economics Summit in 2019
  • Organizes “ESC Dialogue” regularly where esteemed economists, researchers and stakeholders take part in panel discussion on the burning economic issues of our country.
  • Organized two episodes of “People’s Debate” in partnership with EMK Center on the topics: “The Unemployment Epidemic of the University Graduates” and “Soaring Prices: Causes and Cure of the Price Hike Conundrum” in 2019 and 2020 respectively
  • Organized two episodes of “Dialogue with IMF” in 2019
  • Organized a Public Lecture by Professor Murat Yulek on “How Nations Succeed: Manufacturing, Trade, Industrial Policy and Economic Development” in 2019
  • Organized a Dialogue on ‘Budget Allocation Mechanism for the Ultra-Poor’ in collaboration with the BRAC at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel in 2011
  • Organized an intergenerational dialogue with the Centre for Policy Dialogue titled ‘Bangladesh Economy in 2011-2012: Current Macroeconomic Challenges in 2012
  • Organized a presentation session on "Innovation Economics: A New Frontier & How Bangladesh is Doing" in 2014
  • Organizes an annual presentation competition titled "SPEAKONOMICS"’ since 2015 on global economic issues
  • Organizes an annual intra-department Economics quiz competition “QUIZINIUS”
  • Organizes a series of sessions titled “Talk research” where the prominent economists and researchers of the country present their research works and experiences with the students
  • Hosts “Building Bridge”, a series of sessions where current and ex-students of the department share their research work/ideas/academic experiences with current students
  • ESC was a student partner of 14th SAESM (South Asian Economics Students Meet) organized by SANEM in 2018
  • Organizes weekly Study Circles which are conducted by the students
  • Organized a session with Dr. Mohammad Parvez Imdad on ‘LDC Graduation and Financing SDGs’
  • Hosted an Youth Dialogue with The IMF on South Asian Economy
  • Hosts writing competitions such as “ভাষার মাসে কথা কথন” and “বিজয়ের স্মৃতি রোমন্থন”
