Economics Study Center has an illustrious history. The organization started its journey back in 1973 when Dr. Sajjad Zohir took the initiative to form the organization. Professor Dr. M. M. Akash, Mahbub Ahmed, and Dr. Mahmud Khan subsequently elevated the organization to a new level with their dynamic activities and policy debates.
It was our pleasure to host a session with the visionary minds behind ESC to get a glimpse of the past. The fourth episode of ESC Dialogue, an online event was organized by Economics Study Center (ESC) on 14 June 2020. The event went on air at 8pm from the ESC's official Facebook page. The topic for discussion was “Budget 2020-21 and its effectiveness to fight against COVID-19 crisis.”
ESC Dialogue: Episode 4 was moderated by Dr. M. M. Akash, professor of the Department of Economics at University of Dhaka. Dr. Selim Raihan, professor of the Department of Economics at University of Dhaka and executive director of SANEM; Mir Nasir Hossain, former president of FBCCI; Dr. Iqbal Kabir, director of Planning and Research, DGHS; and Dr. Nazneen Ahmed, senior research fellow of BIGD were present as discussants in this dialogue. The discussants highlighted the sectors such as agricultural, industrial, health sectors that can be affected the most due to COVID-19 crisis and reasoned how the upcoming budget is important to recover these sectors. They also argued on whether this budget is susceptible to reduce poverty and aid those poor people who are seriously getting affected due to this global pandemic. ইকোনমিকস স্টাডি সেন্টার জাতীয় ও আন্তর্জাতিক অর্থনীতির সমসাময়িক বিষয় নিয়ে নিয়মিত বিভিন্ন অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করে। ইএসসি আলাপন ইএসসির অন্যতম অনলাইন আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠান যার মাধ্যমে আমরা সমসাময়িক বিষয়ে বিশেষজ্ঞদের মতামত তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করি।
করোনা মহামারির এই সময়ে দেশের দরিদ্র জনগোষ্ঠী কষ্টে জীবনযাপন করছেন। পিপিআরসি-বিআইজিডির একটি গবেষণা প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, দেশের দরিদ্র জনগোষ্ঠীর জন্য প্রতি মাসে ৫৫৯৪ কোটি টাকা সহায়তা প্রয়োজন। বাংলাদেশে সরকারি ও বেসরকারি পর্যায়ে বিভিন্ন ধরণের ত্রাণ কর্মসূচি গৃহীত হয়েছে। কিন্তু সেটি কি প্রয়োজনের তুলনায় যথেষ্ট? যাদের সহায়তা প্রয়োজন, তারা কি প্রকৃতপক্ষেই সহায়তা পাচ্ছেন? অব্যবস্থাপনার কারণে ত্রাণ কর্মসূচির কার্যকারিতা কতটুকু হ্রাস পাচ্ছে? Bangladesh Economics Student’s Network (BESN) launched its first ever program “BESN Building Bridge Dialogue” on the 13th of May. The topic for the dialogue was ‘Campus View on Budget for Fiscal Year 2020-21’. BESN is the first formal network of student bodies in the field of Economics from universities in Bangladesh. Maximising joint welfare of this society is the sole mission. The network created an association of eleven Economics clubs across various universities in Bangladesh.
In this dialogue representatives from BRAC University, North South University, Bangladesh University of Professionals, Rajshahi University and Shahjalal University of Science and Technology were present. The session was moderated by a representative from University of Dhaka. The discussants talked about various sectors of our economy and their importance in the upcoming national budget. With the COVID-19 pandemic worsening, it was imperative for us to maintain the social distancing protocols to flatten the curve. However, we felt that it was imperative to focus on creative endeavors at this critical time to boost the morale of the students.
In this scenario, we will hosted an Online Workshop Series on our Facebook Page this April. The workshops focused on the following topics: a) Workshop on Preparing Cases for Policy-Making Competition: This workshop equipped the students to use the knowledge and theories of Economics to come up with policies to solve the most burning socio-economic issues of our country b) Workshop on Presentation Skills: The goal of this workshop was to provide the students with the necessary guidance on making a stellar presentation. c) Workshop on Data Visualization: This workshop provided the participants with the necessary direction on how to produce top tier visuals. d) Workshop on Writing Skills: This workshop enabled prospective writers to learn the methods of structuring their articles properly. ইএসসি আলাপনের দ্বিতীয় পর্বে আমাদের সাথে ছিলেন Sakib Bin Rashid. ফেইসবুক লাইভে এই অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন ইএসসির সাবেক কোষাধযক্ষ এবং গুরুকুল অনলাইন লার্নিংয়ের আ্যসিস্টেন্ট ম্যানেজার (ব্র্যান্ড এন্ড মার্কেটিং) সিহাব হাসান নিয়ন। সাকিব বিন রশীদ বর্তমানে ব্র্যাক ইয়ুথ প্ল্যাটফর্মের কারিকুলাম এন্ড ম্যাটেরিয়াল ডেভেলপমেন্ট স্পেশালিস্ট হিসেবে নিয়োজিত আছেন। এছাড়াও, তিনি টেন মিনিট স্কুলের চিফ ইন্সট্রাক্টর হিসেবে কর্মরত আছেন। বর্তমান তরুণ প্রজন্মের কাছে জনপ্রিয় এই ব্যক্তিত্ব বিভিন্ন সামাজিক সমস্যার বিষয়ে সোচ্চার ভূমিকা পালন করেছেন। করোনা মহামারির সময়ে সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যমে গুজবের আনাগোণা স্বাভাবিক সময়ের থেকেও বহুগুণ বেড়ে যায়, যার ফলে করোনার বিরুদ্ধে কার্যকর ব্যবস্থা নেয়ার প্রচেষ্টা ব্যাহত হয়। এই কারণেই এ পর্বে আমাদের আলোচ্য বিষয় ছিল "সামাজিক যোগাযোগ মাধ্যম ও গুজব"।
Quizinius is an intra-department quiz competition exclusive to first and second year students of the Department of Economics, University of Dhaka. This year’s Quizinius was hosted in two segments:
The first segment consisted of an intra-batch written round. Six qualifiers from each batch moved on to the next segment. Each qualifier from 99th batch was paired with another qualifier from the 98th batch at random for the Finals, where they then battled it out as teams in an exciting buzzer round for the title of "Quizinius"! The second Study Circle of this year organised by the Economics Study Center focused on the ‘US-Iran Conflict: What Lies Ahead’. The discussion explored the history behind US-Iran relations and delved into Iran’s proxy warfare strategy. Students further debated the causes behind Qasem Soleimani’s killing, the competition for power and the opportunity it presents to other superpowers, and finally, whether WW3 is a plausibility.
The second episode of the People’s Debate, a panel discussion organized by Economics Study Center and the EMK Center, was held at the EMK Center, Dhaka on 18th February, 2020 at 4.30 pm. The discussed topic was “Soaring Prices: Causes and Cures of the Price Hike Conundrum”.
The debate was moderated by Anirban Bhowmik, Country Director of Swisscontact Bangladesh. The panel included Md Munir Chowdhury, former Director General of the WTO Cell, Ministry of Commerce; Dr. Mohammed Helal Uddin, Professor of Economics, University of Dhaka; Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Research Director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, and Farzeen Ferdous Alam, Chairman of Oggro Ventures. Economics Study Center organized the first Study Circle of the year on the topic: Patriarchy and Rape Culture. The discussion revolved around the history of patriarchy and how it influences the culture of rape. There was active participation from the newest members of the department belonging to the freshman batch.
